Tattoo Aftercare 101: How to Ensure Your Ink Heals Perfectly

Step By Step Guide to Proper Tattoo Aftercare:

Follow Your Artist’s Advice

Your tattoo artist is the best source of aftercare advice for your tattoo. They know exactly what your tattoo needs based on size, placement and style. Always follow their advice over general advice.

Keep It Clean

Initial Wash: As soon as you remove the bandage which is usually done 2-4 hours after getting the tattoo, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance free soap. Use your hands to wash the area not a washcloth which could be too harsh.

Daily Cleansing: Continue to wash the tattoo 2-3 times a day for the first week. Use a clean hand or a non-abrasive cloth to avoid irritating the skin.

Drying: After washing pat the tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel or let it air dry. Don’t rub the area as this can irritate the skin and disrupt the healing process.

Moisturise Regularly

Initial Application: Apply a thin layer of a recommended ointment or tattoo aftercare product. Brands like Aquaphor, Tattoo Goo or a fragrance free, gentle moisturiser can work well. This will keep the tattoo hydrated and prevent scabbing.

Transition to Lotion: After the initial few days switch to a fragrance free, non-comedogenic lotion. Apply as needed to keep the tattoo moisturised but don’t over apply which can clog pores.

Don’t Soak

Water Exposure: For the first 2-3 weeks avoid submerging the tattooed area in water. This includes baths, swimming pools, hot tubs and any other form of submersion. Showering is okay but don’t let the water hit the tattoo for prolonged periods.

Pat Dry: After showering pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel. Don’t rub which can disrupt the healing skin.

Protect Your Tattoo

Sun Exposure: Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight as UV rays can cause fading and irritation. After the initial healing period apply sunscreen with a high SPF to the tattooed area whenever it’s exposed to the sun.

Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing over the tattooed area to prevent friction and irritation. Tight clothing can rub and affect the healing process.

Don’t Scratch

Itching and Peeling: It’s normal for your tattoo to itch and peel as it heals. Don’t scratch or pick at scabs as this can cause scarring and colour loss. Instead tap or pat the area if it itches.

Scabbing: If scabs form let them fall off naturally. Picking at scabs can pull out ink and cause uneven healing.

Maintain Hygiene

Clean Hands: Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo or applying aftercare products. This helps prevent the introduction of bacteria and reduces the risk of infection.

Avoid Contact: Limit contact with pets, dirty surfaces, or anything that might introduce bacteria to the tattooed area.

Watch for Signs of Infection

Signs: Monitor your tattoo for any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or increased pain. These symptoms could indicate an infection and may require professional attention.

Seek Help: If you notice any concerning symptoms, consult a healthcare professional or your tattoo artist for advice.

Consider Touch-Ups

Aftercare Review: Sometimes, tattoos may need touch-ups to perfect the design or color. Your tattoo artist will provide guidance on when and if a touch-up is needed. Following the aftercare instructions diligently will minimize the need for touch-ups.

Be Patient

Healing Time: Healing times vary, but most tattoos take about 2-4 weeks for the outer layers of skin to heal and up to several months for deeper layers. Be patient and continue following your aftercare routine to ensure the best results.

By following these comprehensive aftercare steps, you’ll help your tattoo heal properly, maintain its vibrant colors, and enjoy it for years to come. Your new ink deserves the best care, so give it the attention it needs to shine!
