Dan Baldwin The Fear of Letting Go at Lawrence Alkin Gallery

30 September 2015

One of the longest standing artists affiliated with Ink’d, ex-Brighton based Dan Baldwin, is holding his latest show this month at Lawrence Alkin Gallery in London. The Fear of Letting Go is being hailed as Baldwin’s most intimate body of work to date, with the six week long exhibition consisting of stunning brand new paintings, ceramic pots, bronzes and works on paper and wood.

‘The Fear of Letting Go’ will be Dan’s first show in London for many years, with his most recent collection being last year’s huge New York sell out ‘The End of Innocence’. For the latest offering Dan continues to hit on all the big, weighty topics in his work including life, death, love, innocence, nostalgia and childhood.

His exploration into the media of bronze sculpture has also continued in the show, with Dan working closely with a Greek foundry to create his latest bunny girl, a stunning life sized figure of a child complete with sweetie basket and spiders, ominously holding a dagger.

For the first time ever Dan has been planning his paintings, working from sketches and containing the images within the structure of an eerie room. This ambiguous setting allows the viewer to cast their own ideas onto the picture, leaving each one open to interpretation and links the canvases together. All of Dan’s favoured and familiar motifs crop up in the new work, such as a somersaulting swallow, a real painted razorblade, as well as personal items and ephemera from his past.

There will also be a brand new book released that chronicles Dan’s journey from his New York show to the current exhibition, including pages from his sketch book and behind the scenes photographs.

We’ve exhibited Dan’s work many times at Ink’d and it’s brilliant seeing the success and recognition he’s gained over the years. ‘The Fear of Letting Go’ is really one not to be missed and promises to be London’s autumnal blockbuster. A very big well done to Dan from all the team at Ink’d.

"This new work is a lot to do with memory, childhood and innocence - most of the new paintings are contained within a room, or an environment. I’ve always said it’s about life and death, but in this body of work it’s more personal..." - Dan Baldwin 2015.
